Why Battery Calibration Is Needed
The battery has an internal microprocessor that provides an estimate of the charge in the battery as it is charged and discharged. Battery calibration is a more accurate measurement of the battery charge , so the battery needs to be recalibrated from time to time to maintain the accuracy of the battery time and percentage displayed on the screen and to ensure that the battery is operating at its most efficient. Recalibration requires a complete charge and a complete discharge of the battery.
The shorter battery life is not a problem of the battery itself
For batteries that have been used for less than 1 year, the shortened battery life is often not due to normal aging of the battery, but because the laptop BIOS system misjudged the battery power during multiple charging and discharging processes. The battery still has a certain amount of power, but the BIOS mistakenly believes that the power is exhausted and forces the laptop to shut down. If this kind of battery life reduction occurs, first do not rush to conclude that it is a battery quality problem, but use the simple and easy method of “battery calibration” to fully utilize the remaining power.
Standard calibration method: Use the battery calibration function in the notebook BIOS
Many brands of laptops have integrated battery calibration programs in their BIOS, which is generally called “Battery Calibration” in English. You can complete the battery calibration operation by directly entering the laptop BIOS.
First, turn on the computer. After the boot screen appears, press F2 to enter the BIOS menu; use the left and right arrow keys to select to enter the Power menu.
Second, enter the Power menu, you can see the “Start Battery Calibration” option, select it and press the Enter key to execute.
Third, the screen will turn blue and there will be an English prompt asking you to plug in the laptop’s power adapter to charge the battery. When the battery is fully charged, the screen will prompt you to disconnect the power adapter. Then the laptop will continue to discharge the battery until the battery is exhausted.
Fourth, this process takes a while. After the battery is exhausted and the device automatically shuts down, connect the power adapter to charge the battery, but do not turn it on. After charging is complete (the charging indicator light goes out), the battery calibration process is completed.

Manual calibration method: Let the laptop discharge naturally after it is turned on Some laptops do not have a battery calibration option in the BIOS . Through some manual settings, the laptop can discharge during normal operation until it shuts down automatically.
The principle of natural discharge
On the surface, the process of battery calibration is to charge and discharge the battery, but its purpose is not to activate the battery as we imagine, because the current laptop batteries are all lithium batteries, and there is no activation problem. The real purpose of charging and discharging is to let the computer re-recognize the battery capacity. Therefore, it is necessary to discharge the battery as much as possible and let the laptop work at a lower power, so that the calibration effect will be better.
1. In the laptop operating system (using Windows XP as an example), enter “Power Options”. Select “Always on” for “Power Scheme”, set “Turn off monitor” and “Turn off hard disk” to the shortest time, and set system standby to “Never”.
2. In “Alarms” of “Power Options”, cancel all alarm options, so that the battery is completely drained until it shuts down.
3. After the settings are completed, close all applications, turn off WIFI, unplug the power adapter, and use the battery for power. Do not do anything until the battery is exhausted and automatically shuts down. After the discharge is complete, connect the power adapter and charge the battery to complete a battery calibration.
After calibration, we can try to see if the battery life has increased. If not, we can repeat the above method, but it is not recommended to do it frequently. If the battery has been used for a long time and the effect is not obvious after battery calibration, it may be that the battery itself has aged naturally. In addition, if the battery life of the laptop is normal, we do not recommend battery calibration.
In addition to calibrating the battery, we can also try replacing the battery. If the battery is severely aged and cannot be solved by calibration, then replacing the battery is a good choice. There are various brands and models of batteries on the market for us to choose from. We can choose the appropriate battery for replacement according to our laptop model and needs.
Before replacing the battery, we need to make sure the computer is turned off and unplugged. Then, find the battery slot on the back of the laptop, use a screwdriver or special tool to open the screws on the battery slot, remove the old battery, and then put the new battery into the slot, insert it in the correct position, and tighten the screws. Finally, reinsert the power plug into the laptop, turn it on and check whether the new battery is working properly.
In real life, we should pay attention to the precautions for daily use of batteries, such as avoiding over-discharge or over-charging, avoiding high temperature environments, etc. Only by using and maintaining the battery correctly can we extend the battery life and improve our use experience .
